Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about placeholder images and how to use PlaceholderImage.co.

What is a placeholder image?
A placeholder image is a temporary image used during web development and design to fill space where a real image will eventually appear. It typically displays the image dimensions (e.g., 600×400) as a text label, with a neutral background color. Placeholder images help developers build layouts, test responsiveness, and prototype interfaces without sourcing actual content images.
How do I use a placeholder image in HTML?
Simply use the URL as the src attribute of an <img> tag: <img src="https://placeholderimage.co/600x400" width="600" height="400" alt="placeholder" />. You can customize the size, background color, text color, text label, and format via the URL.
Are placeholder images free?
Yes — all placeholder images generated by PlaceholderImage.co are completely free. No sign-up, no API key, no attribution required. Use them in personal and commercial projects without any restrictions.
What image formats are supported?
PlaceholderImage.co supports SVG (default), PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, and GIF. Specify the format by adding the extension to the URL: /600x400.png, /600x400.webp, or as a path segment: /600x400/png.
How do I generate a placeholder image with custom text?
Add the ?text= query parameter to the URL. Replace spaces with + signs: https://placeholderimage.co/600x400?text=Hello+World. For line breaks, use \n: ?text=Line+One\nLine+Two.
Can I use CSS color names instead of HEX codes?
Yes. You can use any standard CSS named color such as red, coral, navy, darkgreen, transparent, etc. For example: /600x400/coral/white or /600x400/transparent/black. Over 140 CSS named colors are supported.
Does PlaceholderImage.co support Retina / HiDPI screens?
Yes. Append @2x or @3x to the image size to get a high-resolution placeholder: /600x400@2x.png generates a 1200×800 image. All formats including SVG support retina scaling.
What is the maximum image size?
The maximum image size is 4000×4000 pixels. The minimum is 10×10 pixels.
Can I use transparent backgrounds?
Yes. Use 'transparent' as the background color: /600x400/transparent/333333. This works best with SVG and PNG formats, which natively support alpha transparency.
What fonts are available?
PlaceholderImage.co supports 12 fonts: Lato (default), Lora, Montserrat, Noto Sans, Open Sans, Oswald, Playfair Display, Poppins, PT Sans, Raleway, Roboto, and Source Sans Pro. Specify a font with ?font=roboto.
